O maior desafio de um fotógrafo é dominar a luz, pois é ela que confronta as leis, as técnicas e o equipamento. Embora, na maior parte das vezes, apenas se consiga observar a cor refletida dos objetos, há momentos em que podemos ver a própria luz como feixes que iluminam o próprio ar.

One afternoon earlier in the spring I noticed this striking Sun pillar on the western horizon. It was visible for more than 30 minutes. After the Sun had set it turned red and pink (lower right photo). If ice crystals are stacked horizontally in cirrus clouds and tipped in the direction of the viewer, then the Sun’s waning light is reflected in the form of a column or spike. Note also the extended sundogs on either side of the pillar, approximately 22 degrees from it and the position of the Sun. Photo taken on April 16, 2018.

I was driving home and I saw this light pillar (sun pillar) on the horizon, unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera so I photographed it with my cell phone. It was visible for more than 30 minutes and after the sunset the light turned red and pink.
Eu estava a conduzir para casa e vi este pilar de luz no horizonte, infelizmente eu não tinha a minha câmara, então fotografei com o meu telemóvel. Foi visível por mais de 30 minutos e após o pôr-do-sol a luz ficou vermelha e rosa.

Lately, the rough sea prevails for weeks turning the beach into a compact and washed sand. The white foam contrasts with the dark colour of the sand.
Nos últimos tempos, a forte agitação marítima prolongou-se por várias semanas tornando a praia num areal compactado e lavado. A espuma na rebentação das ondas contrasta com a cor da areia escurecida.

A compreensão da realidade é muito mais fácil quando conseguimos parar a linha temporal. A fotografia é a máquina do tempo perfeita para imortalizar momentos. Então, conseguimos observar detalhes que nos escaparam ao olhar, quer porque passaram demasiado rápido, quer estivéssemos muito ocupados para nos focarmos neles. Aquelas gotas de água ao pôr-do-sol serão mantidas para sempre em suspensão contra a gravidade nesta imagem. Eis o poder de registar luz num curtíssimo período de tempo.

When The Stars Align – Solar Eclipse
Capturing a partial solar eclipse in Portugal, in a cloudy day, is a strike of luck. However, I had the feeling that I needed to go somewhere and try photographing it. Most of the times, photography is about subconscious messages and intuition. Thus, I went to Santa Rita Beach and I had the biggest surprise of the year. There it was – the incomplete sun lurking.
My amazement grew more when I realized that even the eclipse was aligned with the walkway. There’s a mathematical coincidence that I could hardly imagine to be possible. It was a true blessing having the opportunity to enjoy that moment and capturing it.
Registar um eclipse parcial do sol em Portugal, num dia nublado, é um golpe de sorte. Contudo, tive o pressentimento que tinha de ir algures e tentar fotografá-lo. Na maioria das vezes fotografar baseia-se em interpretar mensagens do subconsciente e a intuição. Assim, fui à Praia de Santa Rita e tive a maior surpresa do ano. Ali estava ele – o sol incompleto a espreitar.
O meu espanto elevou-se quando me apercebi que o próprio eclipse estava alinhado com o passadiço. Há uma coincidência matemática que dificilmente poderia imaginar ser possível. É uma verdadeira gratidão ter a oportunidade de aproveitar o momento e registá-lo.

O Ilhéu de Porto Novo separa as praias de Santa Rita e Porto Novo. Outrora o mar e o rio juntavam-se neste local transformando este pedaço de falésia numa pequena ilha. Atualmente, durante o inverno, o rio tenta reclamar o seu lugar nativo, chegando mesmo a inundar os campos e tornar a estrada intransitável.
Porto Novo islet separates Santa Rita and Porto Novo beaches. Once, the sea and the river joined together here turning this piece of cliff into a little Island. Nowadays, during the winter the river tries to claim its native place, even flooding the fields and blocking the road to transit.

O passadiço leva-nos até um pôr-do-sol de tons quentes, num passeio pela Praia de Santa Rita. Um veleiro navega pelo mar ao sabor da ondulação e da brisa.
The walkway takes us to a sunset of warm tones, in a stroll along Santa Rita beach. A sailboat sails by the sea to the waves and the breeze.

Portugal, well known by its golden sand and blue sea beaches, attracts thousands of tourists. In Zona Oeste (West), at Torres Vedras municipally, Santa Cruz, Santa Rita and Porto Novo beaches provide pleasant leisure moments. The picturesque landscapes are a great local attraction for sure.
Portugal, bem conhecido pelas suas praias de areia dourada e pelo mar azul, atrai milhares de turistas. Na Zona Oeste, no concelho de Torres Vedras, as praias de Santa Cruz, Santa Rita e Porto Novo proporcionam agradáveis momentos de lazer. As pitorescas paisagens são sem dúvida uma grande atração local.
