Spring Thunderstorm Over Maceira

After so many years trying to capture a moment like this, I’ve finally witnessed a two hour long lightning show in a warm spring night without a single rain drop. These were the perfect conditions to create this lifetime photograph.

This thunderstorm gains dimension with my hometown, Maceira, as background, featuring the church tower and the houses all over the hills and valleys. This is a demonstration of nature’s power immortalized on a picture.

EPOD – Sun Pillar Over Lourinhã, Portugal

June 14,2018 – EPOD

Photographer: Paulo P. Pereira
Summary Authors: Paulo P. Pereira; Jim Foster

One afternoon earlier in the spring I noticed this striking Sun pillar on the western horizon. It was visible for more than 30 minutes. After the Sun had set it turned red and pink (lower right photo). If ice crystals are stacked horizontally in cirrus clouds and tipped in the direction of the viewer, then the Sun’s waning light is reflected in the form of a column or spike. Note also the extended sundogs on either side of the pillar, approximately 22 degrees from it and the position of the Sun. Photo taken on April 16, 2018.

I’m very glad this picture was nominated as Earth Science Picture of the Day. A big thank you to USRA and the EPOD team, so as to Dr Jim Foster for the brilliant summary.

I was driving home and I saw this light pillar (sun pillar) on the horizon, unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera so I photographed it with my cell phone. It was visible for more than 30 minutes and after the sunset the light turned red and pink.

Felix Storm

Global Warming brings us more and more the inconveniences of the frequent atypical storms for this region and time of the year. This was a record of the track left by the Felix storm at Santa Rita beach, where fortunately it didn’t cause any damage. In the middle of gale and rain a moment of peace happened. Besides the adverse conditions the persistence paid up, rewarded by some sun beams.

Porto Novo on a Thunderstorm Night

Nature is powerful and awesome. A thunderstorm by the sea at night is one of the most spectacular moments I ever had photographed. At that time, at Porto Novo Beach, the sea was very calm and it wasn’t raining during the thunderstorm.

A natureza é poderosa e incrível. Uma trovoada no mar durante a noite é um dos momentos mais espetaculares que alguma vez fotografei. Quando tirei esta fotografia, na Praia de Porto Novo, o mar estava muito calmo e não chovia.

Time Lapse – Clouds and Sea

To the eyes of the man, time passes so fast! During our lives we seize fragments of those times in memory. I share this little time lapse, registered at the Porto Novo and Santa Rita beaches. The illusion of movement in 500 photos shown in 20 seconds. Paulo P. Pereira …

Santa Rita Beach I immortalized this moment at Santa Rita Beach, where the low clouds reflect the last sunbeams. Thus resulting in a range of soft colours highlighting the foam of the waves.

Surfar na Nuvem The amazing light of sunset lit the giant clouds. In the last moment some beams illuminated the highest parts of the clouds. An epic instant of Portuguese coastal with a fantastic sea that invites to surfing.
