The ideal sunset is not the one you see and wish you could have been there, but the one we watch and store in our memories. It may not have been the most intense, but it is ideal because it is part of our experiences.
beyond the dunes and cliffs of the coastal zone of Porto Novo and Santa Rita, the hills rise as a result of tectonic activity of a singular peculiarity, becoming an icon of the region. A contrast between the verdant green of native species and the blue where the land ends and the sea begins, as Luís Vaz de Camões wrote.
Where once thousands of sea creatures used to inhabit, there is a shortage today, and it is almost rare to find rocks full of life. As in almost everything, the Man has an ominous role in exploitation to extinction. One day, when it’ll be too late, we will visit a museum that will remember these beings. On the grey, bare stones there will only exist bits of rope and plastic to appreciate.
In the dark, there are only shadows and figures. In our lives under regular circumstances we prefer the light. We are pleased, whether it is the brightness of the moon or the intense dawn. Then we are also bearers of our own lights and ideas, illuminating each other.
Praia de Porto Novo (Porto Novo Beach) in one of those magical moments I love to enjoy and to photograph. A calm sea and a sunset glimmering in golden tones.
Santa Cruz Moonlight
One of the things Nature provides to the photographer are the endless possibilities of shooting the same place under various conditions. In this sequence, on different days, I photographed one of the viewpoints of Praia de Santa Cruz, where the landscape changes with each passing moment.
Moonset at Praia de Porto Novo
There’s a small bay nearby Maceira, Torres Vedras. A beach related to the French Invasions and the Battle of Vimeiro, where Alcabrichel River flows too. Here, I portray the beauty of the moonlight at this beach which is a regional icon.
West
The golden sand, the deep blue water contrasting with the light foam. That’s the view at west coast Portugal. The fresh air and the sound of the waves and the seagulls.
A cloudy sunset is almost a Hail Mary. We can either witness a fantastic show of colours or a dull grey nightfall without a glimpse of warm light through the clouds.
“There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun.”
Pablo Picasso
Lately, the rough sea prevails for weeks turning the beach into a compact and washed sand. The white foam contrasts with the dark colour of the sand.
Here the representation of the four elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire. Fire being a distant element, yet well present on life’s evolution that the Sun has made possible.
